FACEBOOK….And to think we give all of our information away…..freely….Meta suspended Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon’s Latino voter organizing Instagram account….in the middle of a get-out-the-vote rally…..just “ONE WEEK” before the midterm elections…..Nixon’s Instagram account, @latinosconangie, suddenly went dark Tuesday…..while her campaign mobilized voters at a Florida rally featuring Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Democratic lawmakers……Meta accused the account of violating its rules on “account integrity”….but as usual offered no specific explanation…..the account was restored Wednesday morning after being offline for more than an hour…..and Ms. Nixon isn’t the first to experience this…..on October 17, Meta suspended the No Kings Coalition’s Instagram account during a nationwide voter-mobilization event…..the company later apologized, blaming automated security systems that mistook heavy activity for suspicious traffic…..and now 14 state attorneys general are demanding answers from Meta about that earlier suspension…..including what safeguards the company has in place to prevent similar disruptions as Election Day approaches…..while there is no concrete evidence that Meta deliberately targeted Nixon’s campaign for political reasons….the timing could hardly have been worse for a candidate trying to reach voters in the final days before November 3…..with the midterms days away…..campaigns need their organizing tools to work……and Meta still hasn’t publicly explained why Nixon’s account was shut down at such a critical moment….I agree with this…. “It owes that explanation to everyone who cares about American democracy.”
