LISBOA (LISBON), PORTUGAL…..This is my second time visiting the city….and my fourth trip to the country…..so, let me tell you about……
THE HILLS…..I don’t know what mountain top Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was on…..but it sure as hell wasn’t in this city….a woman told us the city has seven hills….just like Rome, Italy has seven….this woman lied….everywhere you go….hill….climb that one….another hill….no matter where you go….hill….we climbed a few that would qualify for Olympic ski jumping…..you climb one, then another one and you think you would hit a street that was flat…..hill….my mom walked Rome with no problem at the age of 92….in Lisboa, she wouldn’t last an hour without her adding God’s name followed by a cuss word to express her shock at seeing another one….one thing’s for sure, you’ll get in shape real fast….and the streets are all cobble stone….we asked someone, “How do you deal with the sidewalks if they’re icy?”…..they don’t have to deal with winter ice….but rain can be a problem….and from what I can imagine….sliding down a hill equal to one you could win an Olympic medal on…..on wet cobble stones….slick smooth stones….made that way from centuries of people walking on them….sloping down a steep hill….on a wet rainy day…..does not sound like fun….but we saw old grandma’s taking on many of them….with no problem….so, if you’re coming to visit one day….bad knees, hips, foot problems, shortness of breath, weight problem…..bad back…..the hills are everywhere….best advice….take the Tuk-Tuk tour….it’s gonna cost because they are everywhere….that way you can see stuff while being driven around…..so be prepared.
