JUNE ALMEIDA…..a Scottish virologist with no formal university degree….made history in 1964….when she became to the first person to identify and photograph a coronavirus…..using an electron microscope…..while working at St. Thomas Hospital in London….her pioneering imaging techniques laid the foundation for how scientists….would later recognize and study viruses like SARS, MERS and COVID-19.
FOR OVER TWO DECADES…..Isabella de Fortibus….one of 13th-century England’s wealthiest widows……audaciously resisted two kings….she single-handedly governed the strategic Isle of Wight….using shrewd legal acumen to repel royal attempts to seize her lands and force her into a political marriage……while fiercely defending her autonomy in a man’s world…..her remarkable independence only ended with her death….after which King Edward 1 finally purchased the Isle from her estate….she remained a powerful icon pf female independence during the feudal era.
AFTER HER HUSBAND WAS KILLED…..in 1941, Ukrainian-born Mariya Oktabrskaya sold her belongings…..to fund a T-34 she named “Fighting Girlfriend”…..trained as a driver-mechanic….she fought with the 26th Guards Tank Brigade in 1943-44….she was grievously wounded near Vitebsk…and died in March 1944….and received Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously.
IN 1792….Mary Wallstonecraft wrote words that terrified an entire social order….she argued that women were not born to be inferior….but made so through denial of education….at a time when obedience was expected….she demanded equality of the mind….her ideas challenged religion, politics and family life itself…..long before the word feminism existed….she planted its foundation with courage, reason and a belief that education…..could reshape humanity.
