WWI SOLDIER’S MESSAGES IN A BOTTLE FOUND ON A BEACH 100 YEARS LATER  SHOCKS A FAMILY…..And off to Australia we go…..two messages written by soldiers in route to the battlefields of France during World War I….have been discovered a century later on Australia’s coastline…..the Brown family found the bottle above the waterline at Warton Beach near Eperance…..Peter Brown and his daughter Falicity found it on one of their regular bike trips…..to clean up beach trash….enclosed were upbeat letters written in pencil by Privates Malcom Neville (27) and William Harley (27)…..dated August 15^th, 1916….wow, that’s my birthdate…..anyway,….their troop ship HMAT A70 Ballarat….had departed from the South Australia state of Adelaide….to the east on August 12^th of the year…..for a lengthy voyage to the other side of the globe…..where soldiers would booster the 48^th Australian Infantry Battalion on Europe’s Western Front…..Neville was killed in action a year later….Harley was wounded twice but survived the war….he passed away from cancer in 1934 and his family attributes it to him being gassed by the Germans in the trenches…..Neville asked whoever found the bottle….to please deliver his letter to his mother in Wilkawatt…..which is virtually now a ghost town….his mother passed away in 1916…. “May the finder be well as we are at present”….he also wrote to let his mother know…. “I’m having a good time, food is really good so far, with the exception of one meal which we buried at sea….the ship was heaving and rolling, but we are as happy as Larry”….which is an outdated Australian expression meaning “very happy”….Harley wrote…. “Somewhere in the bight”….referring to the Great Australian Bight…..that’s a massive open bay that starts east of Adelaide…..some believe the bottle didn’t travel far and remained buried in the sand dunes for more than a century……the paper was damp but readable….and the Browns were able to contact both soldiers family members.
