THE MALI EMPIRE WAS RULED BY THE RICHEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED – SO WHAT HAPPENED?……Mansa Musa the 14^th-century African king of the Mail empire…..is said to have amassed a fortune that made him the wealthiest person who ever lived……he caused the valuable metal economic crash of the 14^th century…..by simply giving away gold to the less fortunate…..Mansa Musa ruled from 1302 to sometime in the 1330’s…..he managed to expand Mali’s borders to include trade cities of Timbuktu and Gao…..his wealth is inconceivable even by today’s standards.….he would give handfuls of gold to people without so much as an afterthought……the Mali Empire expanded to 800,000sq. km…..it also became an important center of knowledge…..he commissioned the construction of many spectacular buildings in Timbuktu…..which would become a center of Islamic scholarship…..towards the end of his rule…..he built and funded the famous…..Sankara Madrassa…..which became to greatest centers of learning in the Islamic world…..and had the greatest library in Africa….at one point the library held between 250,000 to 700,000 manuscripts…..in 1324 Mansa Musa embarked on a pilgrimage to Mecca…..a journey he hoped would raise the prestige of the Mail Empire…..and put it on equal footing with other Islamic kingdoms…..he took with him a caravan that may have included over 60,000 people…..along with large amounts of gold and other riches…..and this journey was a costly one to him……besides giving out gold to beggars…..he had a new mosque built every Friday……was spending lots of gold a local bazaars…..and during his pilgrimage…..the emperor of Mali flooded the market with so much gold…..that the price of the valuable metal crashed…..he ultimately had to borrow money to finance his trip back home…..after Mansa Musa’s death…..the Mali empire began a slow decline.
