IN THE 19th CENTURY CUBA…..Enslaved women were listed in registers like livestock….with their “color” graded…..the register from 1826 at the Spring Garden Estate….listed women as “Negro….Mulatto or Quadroon”……their value was calculated by ancestry and age….sisters as young as seven were listed next to their age and “color”…..these documents were used after abolition to calculate compensation…..for the enslavers….not the freed….the British government paid 20 million pounds to the slave owners in 1833…..the enslaved received nothing.
TIMOTHY DEXTER…..A self-proclaimed God…..faked his own death with an elaborate mock funeral…..with 3,000 people to see their reactions….when he saw his wife wasn’t crying…..he woke up furious and caned her in public.
THE SWISS ARMY….Accidentally invaded Liechtenstein in 2007….when 171 soldiers took a wrong turn during a training exercise…..they marched a mile into foreign territory before realizing their mistake….they apologized immediately and Liechtenstein….which didn’t even notice the unauthorized entry…..just laughed it off.
IN THE 19th CENTURY……Americas enslaved women were forced into “breeding” farms….to produce more children for their owners to sell…..this was after the U.S. banned the importation of slaves in 1801….making the domestic slave trade….the forced reproduction of enslaved people a massive business…..men known as “stockmen” were hired to impregnate as many women as possible….women who bore many children were prized above those who worked in the fields…..families were routinely torn apart as children were sold away to another plantation….often never seeing their mothers again…..the trauma of this system created a deep, generational wound in Black families….where ancestry was often a source of pain and silence…..not pride.
SKIDMORE, MISSOURI 1981….He was the town bully….indicted 21 times for assault, arson and rape but never convicted….he terrorized the town for decades….one morning he was shot to death in his pickup truck on the main street….there were nearly 60 witnesses….not a single person saw who pulled the trigger….the town protected the killers with a wall of silence….the investigation went nowhere…..vigilante justice in the heartland where the law failed.
IN 12th-CENTURY GERMANY….drinking water could kill you….disease was spreading through every well….so people turned to beer….early brews were laced with toxic herbs…..which caused madness and death….then Hildegard of Bingen made a radical change….she added hops…..the bitterness preserved the drink and killed bacteria….suddenly, beer became safer than water while saving lives and reshaping Europe.
WHILE EUROPE….Was using leeches and praying over sick people….African doctors were performing surgery and cesarean sections….Europeans didn’t figure those out until the 1800’s…..most mothers and babies died on the table….in 1879, a British doctor traveled to Uganda and watched an African surgeon perform a perfect C-section with a clean incision, controlled bleeding and the surgeon used banana wine as antiseptic…..he cauterized the wound with heated iron and stitched the mother shut with plant fiber.
MEDIEVAL EUROPEAN…..Witch trials executed between 40,000 and 60,000 people….eighty percent of them were women….witch trials peaked across Germany, France, Scotland and Switzerland…..between 1450 and 1750….under church and civil court authority…..women were accused by neighbors, tortured into confession and executed….their property was then seized by courts after a conviction…..accusation patterns show that widows, healers and women without male protection….were targeted most frequently……many villages lost a significant portion of their adult female population within generations….records were kept as legal proceedings.
IN 1971….Johns & Johnson discovered their baby powder contained asbestos…..causing cancer…..internal documents show they knew for 50 years….but kept selling it to mothers and babies…..over 40,000 women got ovarian cancer….in 2023, they agreed to pay $9 billion in settlements but admitted no wrong doing….a trusted baby product gave mothers cancer.
YOUNG IRISH GIRLS….Were sold as cattle in 17th century Barbados…..during the English Civil War…..Oliver Cromwell sent thousands of Irish civilians to the West Indies…..they were known as “Irish slaves…..and plantation owners bought them…..for labor and breeding…..families were separated forever at the auction blocks….their language was beaten out of them…..their descendants exist in the Caribbean today….their Irish surname is the only clue to their origin.
1601…..Philippine Highlands…..the Spanish forces march into the mountains expecting to seize gold from the local tribes…..but instead….they faced thousands of Igorot warriors….who knew the terrain better than any invader……the steep rice terraces become natural fortresses….making large scale attacks impossible…..despite centuries of Spanish expansion across the globe…..these mountain communities remain unconquered for over 300 years.
KING HENRY VIII OF ENGLAND….Executed two of his wives, annulled two marriages….and had one die in childbirth under state neglect…..Henry VIII ruled England from 1509 to 1547….he created the Church of England primarily to grant himself a divorce the Pope refused to authorize…..Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were beheaded at the Tower of London….and both were convicted of evidence historians now widely consider fabricated…..each new queen required the entire English court….to shift political allegiance or face accusation of treason by association….Henry’s court executed over 70,000 people during his reign by some historical estimates….he died obese and alone….and his legs rotting from untreated ulcers.
IN 1996….After Mumbai police rescued 128 Nepalese women from a sex trafficking ring, the Nepalese government refused to take them back due to missing documents. …..Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty quietly stepped up……helped arrange plane tickets for all of them…..and helped ensure their safe return home……Shetty deliberately kept the operation low-profile to protect the women from the mafia and refused any publicity…..the story resurfaced decades later, when one of the survivors, Charimaya Tamang, shared it in an interview……a real-life hero who chose silence over the spotlight.
