……Oh shut up!…..I think it’s fair….everyone else has one….a month to let the world know about….your historical deeds…..and conquests…..and all the contributions you have bestowed around the world….so come on y’all….and it starts on the perfect day….a day only a “Fool” would think this is a good idea….ergo, during this special trip down memory lane….I will be pointing out the “Other” history…..enjoy reading about your history….during April…..White History Month.
IN 1619…..the first enslaved Africans arrived in British colonial America in chains…..this was the beginning of legal chattel slavery across American colonial states…..enslaved people were bought, sold and separated from their children by law and by force…..families were not legally recognized…..marriage had no protection….separation was routine and recorded….after emancipation in 1865….formally enslaved people received no land or reparations…..poverty was inherited.
Between 1905 and 1907….German colonial troops in East Africa killed over 250,000 Maji Maji rebels and civilians…..this was in German East Africa….now Tanzania, under Governor Graf von Götzen’s administration…..villages were surrounded…..women and children were locked in huts…..that were then set on fire…..the scorched-earth campaign destroyed crops and livestock…..causing a famine that killed more than the fighting itself…..the trauma erased the collective memory of the uprising….the region remained depopulated and economically crippled for decades.
IN 1950…..U.S. planes dropped insects carrying disease over North Korea…..during the Korean War…..the U.S. military conducted biological warfare experiments….while dropping germ-laden material…..they dropped files, fleas, and infected rodents over cities and fields….trying to spread cholera and plague…..families watched their children die of diseases they had never seen before….and never knowing the cause came from the sky….the U.S. government never acknowledged these acts as war crimes…..and the families who suffered were given no answers.
IN 1913….South African colonial parliament passed the Native Land Act….banning Black Africans from owning land…..this was in the Union of South Africa…..four years after it was established under British dominion…..Black families were forcibly removed from farms they had worked for generations…..and pushed into designated native reserves….the act reserved only 7% of land for the Black majority….families were separated as men had to seek labor contracts on White farms…..this law laid the foundation for apartheid’s forced removals…..dispossession created generational poverty and landlessness.
IN MEDIEVAL EUROPE…..noble women were legally given in marriage as young as twelve under Canon Law…..with no right to refuse the match chosen by their fathers….Canon Law across Catholic Europe from approximately the 12th century through the 16th centuries…..set the minimum marriage age at twelve for girls and fourteen for boys….following a Roman law precedent and endorsed by Pope Alexander III…..marriage contracts were negotiated between the fathers and the prospective husbands…..the girl’s agreement was legally required…..but socially impossible to withhold….girls were sent to their husband’s household immediately….letters and diaries from noble women recorded fear, isolation and early death from childbirth…..these laws remained in parts of Europe until the 19th century…..church marriage records documenting child marriages survive in the Vatican and national archives across the continent.
BELGIAN, FRENCH AND BRITISH FORCES….used poison gas on colonial populations in Africa and the Middle East after World War I….after WWI ended in 1918….European powers continued using chemical weapons against colonial populations in Morocco, Iraq and Sudan through the 1920’s…..Spain used mustard gas supplied by Germany against Moroccan Rif Fighters and civilians from 1921 to 1927…..and British forces used gas against Kurdish and Arab villagers in Iraq under Churchill’s authorization….the Geneva Protocol banning chemical weapons was signed in 1925….Britain and France signed it…..and continued using gas in colonies with no legal consequences……these operations are documented in European military archives….they appear in almost no European national history curricula or war memorials.
IN THE 1080’s…..a wave of child sex abuse hysteria swept through American towns….in Wenatchee, Washington….a police detective became convinced …..a massive sex ring was operating…he began asking children to name names…..over 40 people were arrested….they were accuse of abusing children….29,000 times….most were poor, illiterate or mentally ill…..a judge later found the detective had pressured the children….to say what he wanted….the accused spent years in prison….one mentally disabled woman confessed to over 6,000 counts of rape…..she could not read….she could not write….she just wanted it to stop.
THE BRITISH CROWN…..ran a secret child migration program….sending 130,000 children to colonies as cheap labor….this was the Child Migrant Program….running from 1869 to 1970….sending poor British children to Australia, Canada and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe)…..children were told their parents were dead….many parents were told their children had been adopted locally…..both were deliberate lies by church and government organizations…….children worked as farm laborers and domestic servants from age seven…..physical abuse was documented across all receiving institutions…..the British government apologized in 2010….Australia apologized in 2009…..thousands of survivors never found their families.
ANARCHA….was an enslaved fifteen-year-old girl in Alabama….on whom surgeon J. Marion Sims performed thirty operations without anesthesia…..between 1845 and 1849……Sims operated at his private surgical hospital in Montgomery, Alabama…..on enslaved women leased to him by local planters…..he named his three primary subjects…..Anarch, Betsey and Lucy in his published medical memoirs….Sims justified operating without anesthesia by claiming Black women had a higher pain tolerance…..this belief had no medical basis and was recorded in his published writings…..he published his surgical techniques in 1852 in the America Medical Journal of Medical Science….Anarcha, Betsey and Lucy were not mentioned.
NAZI GERMANY……staged a Polish attack on a German radio station….to justify invading Poland on 1939…..this was Operation Himmler…..and was executed on August 31st, 1939 at Gleiwitz……one day before the invasion of Poland…..SS officers dressed concentration camp prisoners in Polish uniforms, shot them…..and left them at the station as evidence…..German radio broadcast the fake attack within hours….German newspapers printed photographs the next morning…..the manufactured attack gave Hitler his public justification…..and World War II began the following morning.
ENSLAVED WOMEN IN THE AMERICAN SOUTH…..were forced to nurse White infants…..often at the expense of their own children dying from malnutrition…..this role was called “Wet Nurse”…..and was a common practice across the American South….from colonial era through the Civil war…..enslaved mothers were taken from their own newborns to feed White children….their own children were given to other women….or they were fed corn mush too early…..infant mortality among enslaved children was double that of White children….plantation records noted this without connecting it to the wet nurse system…..former enslaved women described this system in Federal Writers Project interviews during the 1930’s….no legal remedy was ever pursued.
IN 1900…..British forces in Nigeria executed the Asante Queen mother…..Yaa Asanrewaa and exiled her entire court….this was during the War of the Golden Stool…..in the British Gold Coast colony…..now Ghana…..after the war, the Asante people were disarmed…..and sacred golden artifacts were looted and sold the British museums….the Asante confederacy was dissolved and the Queen’s leadership was erased for official colonial history…..the golden stool…..the soul of the Asante people remained hidden for 25-years…..the trauma of looting still fuels restitution debates today.
